Hi readers, it’s Stryker the Cat here, back with some more topical tire industry insight, focusing this week on the state of the South African tire industry. South Africa has long been a key player in the world automotive industry. From assembling right-hand-drive cars for the global market to manufacturing tires, the industry has thrived for years, despite not quite reaching its full potential just yet.

Tire World Exports specialises in exporting locally made tires to other African countries, so the state of the local tire industry is a subject that is quite close to our hearts. As it currently stands, this industry is doing well but actually producing below its capacity.

An Overview

The tire industry is worth about R30bn per annum. Although it has the capacity to produce 18 million tires per annum, it currently only puts out 11 million units. Two million of these are exported to SADC countries.

South Africa has managed to hold its own in this sector from a global perspective, despite heavy competition from China and other far-east countries. The country has managed to secure more than R4bn in investment over the past few years.

The Major African Players

The four major local tire manufacturers are Goodyear, Bridgestone, Continental and Sumitomo. All of these have recently introduced a variety of improvements and innovations which prove that the industry as a whole is alive and well. Goodyear introduced its EfficientGrip Performance, a high performance, fuel-saving tire that is aimed at medium-class, high-end vehicles. It is now manufactured in South Africa and is being exported in large volumes to neighbouring countries.

Bridgestone brought its Enliten tire technology to South Africa recently too. Enliten uses fewer inputs in the manufacturing process and cuts CO2 emissions significantly, reduces the weight of tires by 10 per cent with no effect on wear and tear, and improves vehicle handling.

The Only Way is Up for the South African Tire Export

On the whole, it is clear that the South African tire industry is currently producing below its capacity. However, its output is still formidable and local manufacturers are trusted agents of international tire brands. The country still imports a significant of tires of some classes of vehicles, but also does a very brisk trade with neighbouring countries, acting as a major supplier of tires.
